LIP SURGERY
SYN. LIP AUGMENTATION OR REDUCTION, LIP RESHAPING, LIP REMODELING
Preparing for surgery
Description of procedure
Anaesthesia: local or intravenous.
Length: 15 – 60 min (depending on type of procedure).
Discharge from clinic: on the day of procedure.
Lip surgery includes a number of different procedures, which are selected according to the patient's needs. The most common procedure is lip augmentation but lip reduction or reshaping is also possible.
Currently lip augmentation is based on the use of so called fillers - the patient's own fatty tissue or hyaluronic acid.
Fatty tissue – is removed with a fine needle from a body area selected during surgical consultation and transferred into the lips following specific treatment. The puncture is made at the corner of the mouth.
Aquamid – an elastic filler injected with a fine needle through a puncture made at the corner of the mouth.
Hyaluronic – as above.
For the first lip augmentation procedure less rather than more fullness and temporary fillers are recommended. Permanent fillers are recommended mainly for patients who do not hesitate about future size and shape of their mouth. The lips can always be enlarged but their subsequent reduction may be difficult.
Recovery
- Usually there are: swelling which subsides within 5 – 7 days, transient loss of feeling or abnormal feeling.
- Possible complications: persistent swelling, haematoma, infection, post – surgical herpes; hyaluronic acid
and aquamid may induce allergic reactions.
Duration of results
Fatty tissue – 30% of the injected fat will stay permanently and 70% will be absorbed over time. Usually more fatty tissue is injected (hypercorrection) to make satisfactory results last longer. However repeat procedure is usually needed.
Aquamid – the result is permanent.
Hyaluronic acid – the result lasts 4 – 6 months and after that time the substance is absorbed.
Frequently asked questions
The day after tomorrow I am going to have lip augmentation procedure with my own fatty tissue but today I have started my period. Is it safe for me to undergo the procedure?
Because of reduced blood coagulation and risk of bleeding during the procedure the lip augmentation must be put off until your menstruation is over. Please contact your plastic surgeon to arrange another date of the procedure.
I have decided to have my lips enlarged with Aquamid and I would like to undergo the procedure before going out for my holidays. What is the best moment for the procedure?
The latest moment is three weeks before your departure for holidays, because sun light exposure must be avoided
for the first 2 – 3 weeks following Aquamid injection.
What factors influence the choice of local or intravenous anaesthesia for the procedure of lip augmentation?
First of all it is the patient's pain endurance. Intravenous anaesthesia is much more comfortable but you have to be fasting for six hours prior to the procedure. Moreover intravenous anaesthesia enables better evaluation of the lip size and shape during the procedure because there is no swelling caused by administration of a topical anaesthetic agent. When local anaesthesia is used you can leave the clinic earlier but the very moment of its application may cause pain.
