EYELID LIFT
SYN. BLEPHAROPLASTY, EYELID SURGERY
Preparing for surgery
Description of procedure
Anaesthesia: local or intravenous.
Length: 30 – 60 min.
Discharge from clinic: on the day of procedure.
In the course of the procedure excess skin is removed. If necessary, fatty hernias and puffy bags below the eyes can also be removed improving 'the tired-eye syndrome'. The procedure can involve the upper lids only, the lower ones only or both. The procedure can be combined with or done independently of forehead lift, temporal lift or face lift
or other methods of face rejuvenation such as botox or fillers.
Recovery
- Stitches are removed 4 – 5 days after the surgery.
- Usually there are: little pain which either does not require any pain-killers or is easily controlled by recommended
pain – killer medications; bruising and swelling (especially in the lower lids) that subside within 7 – 14 days. Occasionally redness and itching of the conjunctiva that respond to recommended eye-drops. - Possible complications: haematoma, infection, eversion of the eyelid, difficulty in closing the eyes completely.
The complications occur very rarely and require further treatment.
Duration of results
The result is long – term but the need for repeat surgery after a few or more years can not be excluded.
Frequently asked questions
When after the eyelid surgery will I be able to wear makeup?
The first makeup can be applied 14 days after the stitches are removed.
Can any scars be seen after the eyelid surgery?
Incisions are made in natural creases of the skin so the scars are actually unnoticeable even by extremely piercing observers.
I would like my eyes to look bigger and less tired and my eyelids to regain their past tightness. Should I consider eyelid lift alone or should I think about combining it with forehead lift (I have an impression that for the last several years the skin on my forehead has become loose and my eyebrows hang over my upper eyelids)?
During the consultation prior to the surgery your plastic surgeon will help you make the best possible decision. Depending on individual needs some patients can achieve their optimal results with eyelid lift only whereas the others can benefit more from combining the eyelid lift with forehead or temporal lift or with so called fillers or botox injections. However such a decision can not be made without seeing and examining the patient.
When shall I know whether local or intravenous anaesthesia is going to be used?
Your surgeon will inform you what type of anaesthesia is required for the procedure you are going to have. Type of anaesthesia depends on extent of the procedure.
